Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, relates: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings upon him, returned from a prayer which he recited aloud, and said: “Did any one of you recite along with me in the prayer?” A man said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings upon him, said: “That is why my recitation was becoming confused.” From that time onward, the congregation ceased reciting aloud together in prayers when the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings upon him, recited them aloud. Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated:

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, led us in a prayer which I thought was the Fajr (dawn) prayer. He then recited a hadith until he reached the statement: “Why do I find difficulty in reciting the Qur’an?”

Zuhri said: The Muslims took heed from the words of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. They did not recite along with him when he pronounced it aloud.

Abu Dawud said: I heard Muhammad bin Yahya bin Faris say: The phrase “the people ceased to recite” in the hadith is from the words of Zuhri.
