Article Two

It explains the manners and protocols of a scholar teaching his students.

O esteemed one! Know that the people of refinement have said: The manners and protocols of a teacher instructing his students are seventeen in number.

1- To endure the misbehavior of the students.

2- To refrain from speaking unnecessarily (observing *sumt al-mulazimah*).

3- To be gentle and balanced in temperament.

4- To sit with seriousness and dignity (*vakar*).

5- To keep one’s head lowered.

6- To embrace humility (*tawaazuu*).

7- To abandon jesting and humor.

8- To treat students with gentleness.

9- To be patient with those who struggle in learning; to teach them gradually.

10- To train those among them who are dull (lacking intelligence) with kindness.

11- Not to reprimand those who ask questions repeatedly.

12- To listen attentively and with diligence to the words of those asking questions.

13- To answer the question clearly and in an understandable manner.

14- To accept the arguments presented by the student.

15- To turn towards the Exalted God in obedience.

16- To warn students against pursuing fruitless knowledge.

17- To keep them away from learning beneficial knowledge for anyone other than [the sake of] Allah (His pleasure).

It is essential for every teacher imparting knowledge that he act according to these manners and always teach his students beneficial knowledge.

If you are qualified, impart the sciences,

Disseminate the benefit to all people.

If you put what you know into action, you will be perfected,

You will find wisdom ever within yourself.
