VOLUME 2 – 219 – DRESSING FOR FRIDAY

Abdullah ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, relates:
Umar, son of Hattab, saw a striped silk garment being sold at the door of the mosque and said, “O Messenger of Allah, were you to purchase this garment and wear it on Fridays and when envoys arrive,”. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
“Those who have no share in the Hereafter will wear it.”
Then several garments of this kind came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and he gave one to Umar. Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, said: “O Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, you had spoken to me about the Utarid garment (previously), and now you give me this same garment.” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, replied:
“I did not give it to you to wear it.” Umar then had it worn by a polytheist relative in Mecca. [135]

Salim (may Allah be pleased with him) reported from his father:
'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) found a garment of thick silk in the marketplace and brought it to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), saying, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), purchase this. You may adorn yourself with it on days of festivals and when receiving ambassadors." Then he dispatched the hadith. The preceding hadith is more complete.

Muhammad ibn Yahya ibn Hibban narrated:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “If one of you finds [something], there is no sin upon him. Or if one of you finds, it is permissible for him to acquire two garments for Friday other than his work clothes.”
The narrator Amr said: The report reached me from Ibn Habib, relating from Musa ibn Sa’d, from Ibn Hibban, and he from Ibn Salam, that Ibn Salam heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ utter these words from the pulpit.
Abu Dawud also said: This hadith was narrated to me through Wahb ibn Jariyah, by way of his father, from Yahya ibn Ayyub, from Yazid ibn Abi Habib, from Yazid, Musa ibn Sa’d, and he through the route of Yusuf ibn Abdullah ibn Salam, from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
