SECTION ON PRAYER · 15 – THE PEBBLES OF THE MOSQUE
458 – From Abū Walīd (may Allah be pleased with him): I asked Ibn ʿUmar about the pebbles in the Prophet’s Mosque (al-Masjid al-Nabawī). He said: One night we were caught in the rain, and in the morning everywhere was wet. Everyone brought pebbles in their garments and spread them underneath themselves. When the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) finished the prayer, he said: “How excellent this is.”
EXPLANATION
This noble hadith indicates that it is permissible to lay pebbles on the floor of the mosque.
459 – From Abū Ṣāliḥ (may Allah be pleased with him): It was said that if a person removes a pebble from the mosque, the pebble supplicates, “Let no one remove me from here for Allah’s sake.”
EXPLANATION
Yunāshidu: In this context, the meaning of this word is “do not remove me for Allah’s sake.”
460 – It is narrated from Abū Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him): Among the narrators, Abū Badr said: I think this hadith is attributed by Abū Hurayra to the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him): “The pebbles ask those who remove them from the mosque, for Allah’s sake, not to remove them.”
