PRAYER SECTION · 45 – THE ECHO IN THE CALL TO PRAYER
Mujahid, may Allah be pleased with him, related:
I was in the company of Ibn Umar when a man made a call (to announce the beginning of prayer – the adhan) at midday or afternoon prayer. Ibn Umar said, “Come out with us. This is innovation.”
EXPLANATION:
Tesvib: This refers to someone calling out like "the time for prayer" as if announcing the start of prayer. The later scholars did not see any objection in saying this. According to what is written in *Awn al-Ma'bud*, the tesvib that Ibn Umar declared innovation was when a person said, “Prayer is better than sleep,” during the midday and afternoon prayers, as is done in the morning adhan. Ibn Umar disapproved of it.
Tirmidhi says:
The scholars differed regarding the meaning of tesvib; some said it means "Prayer is better than sleep" in the morning adhan.
Ibn Mubarak and Ahmad bin Hanbal said this. Ishaq bin Rahuya, however, said that “tesvib” is a call after the adhan, due to the congregation’s delay, whereby someone says something like, “Hasten to prayer! Hasten to success!” – this is an innovation invented by people later on. (*Awn al-Ma'bud*, vol. 1, *Badr al-Mashaahid*, vol. 4, p. 113)
