SECTION ON PRAYER · 100 – PRAYER ALONE BEHIND THE ROWS

682 – From Wābisa (may Allah be pleased with him):
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a person performing prayer alone behind the row
and ordered him to repeat it.
Sulaymān ibn Harb says: He ordered him to repeat the prayer. [440]
EXPLANATION
Ahmad ibn Hanbal and Ishāq ibn Rāhūyah, taking the apparent meaning of this hadith, said that one who performs prayer alone behind the row, behind the imam, must repeat the prayer.
Imām al-Aʿẓam, Mālik, and al-Shāfiʿī (may Allah have mercy on them) said that the apparent meaning of this hadith indicates that repeating the prayer is recommended (mustahabb); even if he does not repeat it, the prayer is valid. As evidence, they cited the hadith that will be mentioned next.

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Does not one of you fear that when he raises his head while the imam is in prostration, Allah may turn his head into that of a donkey, or his appearance into that of a donkey?” [405]
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about praying in a single garment. He replied, “Does each of you have two garments?” [406]
He said, “Let not one of you pray in a single garment without a part of it being over his shoulder.” [407]
He said, “When one of you prays in a single garment, let him cross its two sides over his shoulders.” [408]
I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) praying, having wrapped himself in a single garment, crossing its two sides over his two shoulders. [409]
“O assembly of women, do not raise your heads (from prostration) until the men have raised theirs.” [410]
He said, “Yes (you may pray), but even if with a thorn, fasten it.” [411]
633 – From Muhammad, son of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, son of Abū Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them), from his father ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, (who said): Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh led the prayer in a shirt. He did not have a cloak over it. When he finished the prayer, he said: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) lead the prayer in a shirt. [412]
I said, “Command, O Messenger of Allah.” He said, “When it is wide, cross its two sides over your shoulders; when it is narrow, use it as a lower garment and tie it around your waist.” [413]
I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: “Whoever drags his shirt in arrogance during prayer, it is neither lawful in accordance with Allah’s pleasure nor is it an act worthy of respect.” [414]
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Allah does not accept the prayer of a woman who has reached the age of menstruation except with a head covering.” [415]
643 – It is narrated from Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade praying with the garment thrown over the shoulders (without wearing it properly) and a man covering his mouth. [416]
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not pray in our undergarments or our sheets. [417]
I heard him say: “The case of one who prays with his hair tied up is like the one who prays with his hands tied behind his back.” [418]
I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the day of the conquest praying, and he placed his sandals to his left. [419]
Here, the narrator Ibn ʿUbbād was in doubt, or there was disagreement as to whether he was the one who doubted. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was seized by a cough. He stopped reciting and bowed. ʿAbd Allāh ibn Sāʾib was also present in this prayer. [420]
I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) pray both barefoot and wearing sandals. [421]
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would pray, and I, while menstruating, would be in line with him. Often, when he prostrated, his garment would touch me, and he would pray on a mat of palm fiber. [422]
A man from the Anṣār said: O Messenger of Allah, I am a large man. I am unable to pray with you. He prepared food for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and invited him to his house. He said: Pray so that I may see how you pray and thus follow you. They sprinkled water on a corner of their mat and spread it for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood and prayed two rakʿahs there. Fulan, son of Jārūd, said to Anas, son of Mālik: Did the Prophet always pray the forenoon prayer (ḍuḥā)? Anas replied: I did not see him pray it except on that day. [423]
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would visit Umm Sulaym. Sometimes, the time for prayer would come while he was in her house. We had a mat made of palm fiber. We would sprinkle water on it, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would pray on it. [424]
We would pray with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in intense heat. If one of us could not bear to put his face on the ground, he would spread his garment and prostrate on it. [425]
He replied: “They complete the front rows. They stand straight and close together in the row.” [426]
I saw the one praying join his shoulder to his companion’s shoulder, his knee to his companion’s knee, and his heel to his companion’s heel. [427]
He said: “Straighten your rows, or Allah will turn your faces.” [428]
He said: “Do not stand unevenly, lest there be discord in your hearts. Allah and His angels send blessings on the first row.” [429]
He said: “Do not leave gaps for Satan. Whoever fills a row, Allah will join him (with His mercy). Whoever cuts off a row, Allah will cut him off (from His mercy).” [430]
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Straighten your rows, bring them close together, align your necks. By Allah in Whose hand is my soul, I see Satan entering through the gaps in the rows like a small black sheep.” [431]
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Straighten your rows, for straightening the rows is part of perfecting the prayer.” [432]
“Fill the front row, then the one that follows it. If there is any deficiency, let it be in the last row.” [433]
One Friday, I prayed with Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him). Because of the crowd, we were pushed towards the pillars. Some of us went ahead of the pillars, some of us were pulled back. After the prayer, Anas said: In the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we used to avoid this (having the rows cut by the pillars). [434]
He said: “Let those who have reached puberty and are of sound mind follow me in prayer, then those who are closest to them, then those who are closest to them.” [435]
Reporting a similar hadith, he added: “Do not stand unevenly in the rows, lest discord enter your hearts. Also, beware of the confusion of the markets.” [436]
He said: “Indeed, Allah the Exalted and His angels send blessings on the right sides of the rows.” [437]
He said: “The best row for men is the first row, and the least virtuous is the last. The best row for women is the last, and the least virtuous is the first.” [438]
“Move to the front row and follow me. Those in the rows behind you should follow you. If a people continue to lag behind, Allah will keep them behind.” [439]
Sulaymān ibn Harb says: He ordered him to repeat the prayer. [440]
