SECTION ON PRAYER · 31 – RAISING THE VOICE IN THE ADHAN
515 – It is narrated from Abū Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The extent to which the mu’adhdhin’s (caller to prayer) voice is loud and prolonged, his sins will be weighed accordingly. Every moist and dry thing that hears his voice will bear witness for him. For the one present in the congregation, only the reward of having performed twenty-five prayers is written. The errors committed between the two are forgiven.” [337]
EXPLANATION
This noble hadith informs that the more the mu’adhdhins raise their voices to the highest pitch, the greater the reward they will receive.
516 – From Abū Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “When the call to prayer is made, Satan flees, passing wind, so as not to hear the adhan. When the adhan is finished, he returns. When the mu’adhdhin makes the iqama, he turns his back and flees. When the iqama is finished, he returns again, until he comes between a person and his nafs (the lower self), casting thoughts into his mind: ‘Remember this, remember that,’ reminding him of things he did not have in mind, until the person becomes unsure of how many rak‘ahs he has prayed.” [338]
EXPLANATION
When Satan hears the adhan, he is distressed and finds no other recourse but to flee; as a sign of his distress, he passes wind. Or, it is said metaphorically that he passes wind due to the great distress he experiences.
