PRAYER SECTION · 29 – CHAPTER ON THE CALL TO PRAYER
Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) ordered Bilal to say the adhan twice, and the iqama once. Hammad added in his narration only the phrase, "except for the word 'iqama'."
[Footnote: This hadith indicates that the words comprising the adhan should be recited twice, and in the iqama, once; it is narrated that only the phrase “kad kamat as-salat” (the prayer has begun) should be repeated twice.]
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated it, as was narrated in the hadith of Wuhayb previously. Isma'il said: I transmitted this hadith to Ayyub, and he responded, except for the phrase "Qad qamat as-salat" [Indeed, the prayer has been established], which he repeated twice.
According to the narration of Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), he said:
During the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him), the adhan was recited in pairs, and the iqama was recited individually. However, the mu’adhdhin would say, “The prayer has begun, the prayer has begun.” We would hear the iqama and immediately perform ablution and prepare for the prayer.
Shu'ba said: I did not hear any other narration from Abu Ja'far regarding this hadith.
It is related from the muezzin of the Uryan Mosque, Abu Ja'far: I heard the muezzin of the Grand Mosque, Abu al-Musanna, say, "I heard [this] from Ibn Umar." The narrator transmitted the hadith.
