Jesus had a foolish companion. When he saw dead bones in his path, the companion said, “Teach me that exalted name you recite to revive the dead, so I may do a good deed and give life to these bones.”
Jesus replied, “Be silent! This is not within your capacity. Your breath must be purer than rain, your understanding more insightful than those who possess it. Adam burned and yearned for ages until he was purified and became trustworthy of the treasures of the heavens. You grasp a stick in your hand, but where is your hand compared to Moses’?” The foolish man said, “I have no aptitude for secrets; recite that name to these bones.”
Jesus said, “Lord, what mysteries are these? Why does this fool embark on such a struggle? How can this sick person not concern themselves with their own ailment? Why is this putrid one not worried about his own life? He abandoned his own death and seeks to revive a foreign corpse!” Allah desires contraction before expansion. One who sows thorns will only reap fresh, thorny shoots. Whoever sows thorns in the world, do not seek them in a rose garden! Even if he grasps a rose, it will be thorny. A friend becomes a serpent to a friend. The chemistry of one who fears evil is poisoned and serpentine (it poisons everything, and everything turns into a serpent against him).
Jesus recited the name of Allah over the bones at the request of the young man. By Allah’s decree, He revived those bones for that immature person. Then a black lion arose and pounced on the fool, killing him. It tore off his head and spilled his brain onto the ground. There wasn’t even a fig-sized brain in his head. Even if he had a brain, it would break and perish, leaving only his body; his soul would remain. Jesus said to the lion, “Why did you tear him apart so quickly?” The lion replied, “You were tired of him, distressed by him.” Jesus then asked, “Why didn’t you drink his blood?” And the lion said, “It was not my provision. It was not destined for me.”
Many are like that roaring lion who passes from this world without eating his prey. His destiny is no greater than a straw; yet his greed is as high as Mount Allah, and he has no face before the universe! O Allah, Who makes difficult things easy for us! Deliver us from frivolous matters. You showed it to us as provision, but it was a trap!
Show us everything as it truly is. The lion said, “O Messiah, this hunt was only for instruction. If it were my provision in the world, what business would I have with the dead? How could I die? But it is fitting that he who finds clear water should urinate like an ass into it. If the ass knew the value of the water, instead of putting his foot in it, he would raise his head. He finds a prophet who gives life-giving water and says, ‘O Abıhayat [Water of Life], be my life, revive me!’”
Come to your senses, dog of the self; do not seek resurrection. For it has been your enemy for ages. Let the earth cover the bones of that dog who keeps him from the hunt! If you are not a dog, why are you attached to bones? Why do you cling to blood like a tick? What an eye is this that does not see, but is disgraced in assemblies?!
Sometimes errors occur in assumptions; but what kind of assumption is it that comes blindfolded from the path! O eye that weeps for others, come, sit for a while and weep for yourself! A branch sprouts from a weeping cloud and renews itself. For a candle becomes brighter by weeping. Sit where they are weeping, for you are more worthy to weep! For those who grieve in separation are heedless of the eternal mine of words. For there is a pattern of imitation in the heart; wash your self with tears!
Imitation is an affliction of every good deed. Even a solid mountain is nothing but straw in truth. The blind one, though strong and quick to anger, is but a piece of flesh without eyes! Even if he utters a word from the depths of his heart, he has no knowledge of it. He becomes intoxicated with his own words, yet how far is that from wine! He is like a river; he cannot drink water so that those who will drink from behind may flow.
He who falls into imitation wails like a reed, but only for the one who wants to hear his lament. The imitator weeps as he speaks, but the intention of the impious is only greed. He weeps and utters bitter words. But where is the heart that burns, and where is the torn hem?
This one is like David; the other is like a voice! This one’s words are born of anguish, while the other recounts stale words he has memorized. Come to yourself, come to yourself! Do not be captivated by those sorrowful words. There is a load on the ox, and the cart also cries out in lamentation! But the imitator is not deprived of reward. When it comes to accounting, they pay the weeping one.
The disbeliever says ‘Allah,’ and the believer says ‘Allah.’ Yet there is a great difference between them. The poor man says ‘Allah’ for bread, while he who fears forbidden things does so from the heart, with his soul.
If the poor man knew the value of what he said, it would be neither little nor much in his eyes. Those who seek bread have been saying ‘Allah’ for years, but they are like donkeys carrying a Mushaf [Quran] for straw. If what is on their lips were born from their hearts, it would illuminate their souls and their bodies would become atoms.
The name of Satan is useful for magic; you obtain gain with the name of Allah!
