THE CHAPTER ON PURIFICATION · 64 – SPRINKLING WATER ON THE GARMENT AFTER ABLUTION
166 – Sufyan ibn Hakim as-Sakafi, or Hakim ibn Sufyan as-Sakafi,
may Allah be pleased with him, said:
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, would perform ablution when he urinated, and (at the end of his ablution) would take a little water in his hand and sprinkle it on his garment. [138]
Abu Dawud said: A group of narrators agreed upon Sufyan through this chain of narration. Some said Hakim or Ibn-i Hakim.
167 – From a person of the Banu Sakif, from him to his father, it is related that:
I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, urinate and then sprinkle water on his garment.
168 – From Hakim or Hakim’s son, who narrated it from his father:
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, urinated, then performed ablution, and sprinkled water on his garment.
EXPLANATION
It is considered polite for those not fasting to drink three sips of water from the remaining water after ablution, and to take a handful of water and throw it forward. Because this water serves as an expiation for any particles of urine that may have splashed onto the clothing.
