**Fourth Point**
Concerning the importance and benefits of rising in the night, as a means of reducing sleep.
O esteemed one! Know that the Friends of God have said: "Our felicity resides in the nights." It is in the nights that we withdraw from people (seclusion), and remain alone with our Friend (solitude). The night is the companion of lovers in their sorrows, the confidant of the gnostics. In the night, the sorrow of the lover intensifies. In the night, the head of the gnostic plunges into contemplation. The night is the felicity of the perfect man and the sun that descends upon his heart’s heaven. Every night that sun rises, but the people are swept away by the sea of sleep. All desires are attained in the early mornings. To sleep like a blind person at that time is incomprehensible. The early morning hours are a blessed time. Whoever remains awake during those hours belongs to the people of felicity. Lovers do not sleep in the early morning. Gnostics do not stray far from the heart. In the early morning, the gates of mercy open. Whoever remains awake at that time finds the pleasure of the soul and the purification of thought.

1-The eye of the lover awakens in the hour of dawn,
The soul of those with hearts is filled with mysteries in the hour of dawn.
2-The city of the heart is solitary and without form at night,
The assembly of the soul becomes free from the troubles of others in the hour of dawn.
3-Dawn lifts the veil from the face of the beloved,
He who is watchful beholds it in the hour of dawn.
4-Dead hearts are asleep, unaware of the state of wakefulness.
The knowing one is awake; in the hour of dawn, he finds favor with the state.
5-The heart of those yearning for the radiant face of the beloved is filled with light in the hour of dawn.
6-The Divine Essence calls out each night, "Is there anyone who asks?"
Whoever desires anything in the hour of dawn obtains it.
7-If you desire that the gate of God’s grace be opened to you,
Waiting at the door of the heart is a profitable endeavor in the hour of dawn.
8-He whose occupation is eating and drinking, both night and day immediately,
Sleep is necessary for him; otherwise he becomes ill in the hour of dawn.
9-O True One! Awaken in the hour of dawn, do not be lazy, for
To sleep is a disgrace and shame to humankind in the hour of dawn.
