SECTION ON PURITY · 142 – THE RULING REGARDING IMPURITIES ON CLOTHING

Ummü Jahdar al-Amiriyya (may Allah be pleased with her) asked Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) about menstrual blood staining clothing. Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said, “I was with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him), and we were wearing our undergarments. Then we threw our outer garments over them and lay down. When morning came, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) took that garment and put it on, then went out and performed the Fajr prayer. Afterwards he sat. A man said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, a drop of blood has stained this.’ The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) took hold of the area near the blood and gathered it up, sending it to me in the hand of a young boy, saying, ‘Wash it for me, dry it, then send it to me.’”
I immediately had my basin brought, washed it, and dried it, and returned it to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him). When the time of Dhuhr prayer arrived, he was on that garment.
*Explanation:*
Masrura: This means “folded” or “rolled up.”
The honorable hadith indicates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) had the impurity removed from his garment, but it does not state whether he repeated the prayer he performed while wearing the soiled garment or did not. The scholars have disputed this matter. According to the Hanafi school, it is necessary to repeat the prayer. According to the Maliki school, it is not necessary. According to Shafi’i and Ahmad ibn Hanbal, two opinions are reported: one opinion says that the prayer should be repeated, and another opinion says that it should not.
