SECTION ON PURIFICATION · 136 – THE RULING ON SEMEN STAINING CLOTHES
371 – From Hammām ibn Hāris (may Allah be pleased with him): While he was a guest with ʿĀʾisha (may Allah be pleased with her), he experienced a wet dream. He was washing the semen stains from his garment, or washing the garment itself. A slave girl informed ʿĀʾisha (may Allah be pleased with her) of the situation. ʿĀʾisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I also saw the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) scraping off semen stains from his garment. This ḥadith was narrated by Ḥakam, as well as by al-Aʿmash. [260]
EXPLANATION
This noble ḥadith indicates that it is possible for a person who has experienced a wet dream to clean the dried semen stains from his undergarment by rubbing them off. In the ḥadith, it is stated that the person who experienced the wet dream was Hammām ibn Hāris. According to the narration in Muslim, it is understood that the one who experienced the wet dream was Shahāb ibn Hawlānī.
372 – ʿĀʾisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I used to scrape and rub off semen from the garment of the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him), and he would then pray in it. [261]
373 – It is narrated from ʿĀʾisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: I used to wash the semen stains from the garment of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and then I would see a patch or wavy (variegated) marks (where it had been washed) on it. [262]
EXPLANATION
According to this noble ḥadith, washing semen is more appropriate for cleanliness. According to Abū Ḥanīfa, semen is impure and must be washed. However, if it is dry, it can be purified by rubbing it off. (Maʿālim al-Sunna, vol. 1, p. 223)
