PURITY SECTION · 96 – THE CASE OF A WOMAN WHO HAS EXPERIENCED SEMENAL EMISSION
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: Umm Sulaym al-Ansarī said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): “O Messenger of Allah, may Allah not feel shame in telling the truth. A woman sees what men see in a dream, should she perform ghusl or not?” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "If she finds wetness (semen) on her garment, then she should perform ghusl." Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I said to Umm Sulaym, “May you be wretched, does a woman have discharge?” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "O Aisha, may your right hand become needy. A woman has no semen; from where would the child resemble his mother’s side?"
Abu Dawud said: Thus Uqay, Zubaydī, Yunus ibn Zūhrī's nephew, narrated from Zūhrī, from Ibrahim ibn Abi’l-Wazir, from Malik, who also narrated from Zūhrī. Zūhrī agreed with al-Musaffi’ al-Hujabi. Urwa narrated from Zaynab bint Abi Salama, who narrated from Umm Salama. Indeed, Umm Sulaym came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) [189]
EXPLANATION:
These honorable hadiths indicate that if a man or woman experiences seminal dreams and does not see wetness on their garment or bed upon waking, ghusl is not required. If one sees something in a dream but wakes up with semen, then ghusl is necessary.
“May your right hand be needy”: This means may it become covered in dust, but the literal meaning is not intended here. There are expressions used among Arabs to indicate that something is inappropriate. This sentence is one of them. For example, phrases like “terabet yadak,” “may Allah destroy him, his mother curses him and his father,” and "sekaltuhu ummuhu" are of this nature.
Regarding a woman’s semen, women possess feelings just as men do. They also have discharge. Rather, their discharge contains ova, while the man's semen contains sperm. The influence and dominance of the maternal substances found in the woman's ovum cause the child to resemble his mother or her side.
