SECTION ON PURITY · 81 – THE SITUATION OF ONE OVERCOME BY NAJAS (Impurity)
Shakik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: Abdullah ibn Mas’ud said: We did not renew our ablutions because of treading filth, nor did we gather [our hair and clothing] to prevent them from touching the ground [in prostration].
Abu Dawud said: I have heard a hadith about this matter from Ibrahim ibn Abu Muawiya A'mash, who narrated it from Shakik, who narrated it from Masruk, or A’mash narrated to me from Shakik, who narrated it from Masruk. Shakik said: Abdullah ibn Mas’ud said. Hennad said: I heard it from Shakik, or A’mash told Abu Muawiya from Shakik. And Shakik said: Abdullah said.
COMMENTARY
This honorable hadith indicates that a person who treads upon filth does not need to renew his ablution. A believing person in a state of ritual purity may tread upon filth; if his foot becomes soiled, it is obligatory for him to wash only that foot. Otherwise, he is not required to renew his ablution. Furthermore, this honorable hadith indicates that preventing hair from falling on the earth during prostration and protecting clothing from touching the knees is not an appropriate practice.
