Firstly, sleep is indicated by verses of the Qur'an and sacred hadiths.

O esteemed one! Know that Allah Most High has shown mercy to His servants, inviting them from heedlessness to His presence, and has announced the excellence of reviving the night. Indeed, in His Eternal Word He says:

“For those who are patient, truthful, humble before their Lord, spend [in charity], and ask for forgiveness during the hours of darkness.” (Al-Imran, 3/17)

“They pass their nights in devotion to their Lord and in standing [in prayer].” (Furqan, 25/64) “O you who are enveloped in your mantle! Rise up for prayer at night—or a portion thereof—and recite the Qur’an plainly.” (Muzzammil, 73/1-4) “(O Prophet!) Your Lord knows best that you spend a third of the night, or half of it, or a third of it – and [that] some of those with you – in prayer, and that Allah will surely appoint what is decreed.” (Muzzammil, 73/20) “Prostrate before Him during a portion of the night, and glorify Him therein for a time prolonged.” (Insan, 76/26) “Arise at night and perform [a voluntary] prayer—so that your Lord may reward you with something to be praised for.” (Isra, 17/79)

Indeed, in His Psalms He says: "O My servant! You will find Me in the darkness of the night. So seek Me so that you may find Me." A sacred hadith states: “O Adam’s son! How can your heart be illuminated while you sleep much? Rather, postpone your slumber to the grave. Sleep little and let your heart be enlightened. Revive the nights with worship. He who says he loves Me but then separates from Me by sleeping at night is a liar.” A perfect one has said:

*Poem:*

How wondrous it is for the lover to sleep!

All sleep is forbidden to the lover.

*(Translation of the poem)*

It is wonderful how a lover sleeps; all sleep is forbidden to him.

*Rhyme:*

1- Sleep not, O moon-faced one, for a night, so that the treasure of eternity may show its face to you.

2- Let the heat from the sun of the heart warm the night. May this two-eyed vision be opened by that kohl.

3- Endure one night and do not lay your head down. Let the bird of felicity nest upon your head.

4- You will find daytime for earning, and nighttime for the love of the Beloved; the lover remembers God every night.

5- People fall asleep and see dreams; those who are awake attain the generosity of the Most High.

6- The Truth said to David: “My lover does not sleep at night, he praises Me.”

7- The seeker of seclusion becomes a lover so that he may show his heart’s acceptance to the beloved.

8- It is impossible for one who yearns intensely for water to see that face in a dream if he sleeps.

9- Truth! Every night, communication comes from the Truth; “Arise and turn towards Me, find guidance.”
