SECTION ON PURIFICATION · 39 – THE LEFTOVER ABLUTION WATER OF A WOMAN
77 – According to the narration from ʿĀʾisha (may Allah be pleased with her): – “The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) and I would perform the major ritual bath (ghusl) from the same vessel while both of us were in a state of major ritual impurity (janāba).” [87]
EXPLANATION
It is permissible for a woman and her husband to perform the major ritual bath (ghusl) at the same time using water from the same vessel. The proof for this is this hadith. However, if they are both in a state of major ritual impurity (janāba), it is preferable, while washing, to take the water from the basin with a separate vessel and pour it over themselves, rather than taking it directly by hand, in order to avoid any disagreement.
78 – According to the narration from Umm Subayyat al-Juhaniyya (may Allah be pleased with her), she said: While I was performing ablution (wuḍūʾ) from a vessel, sometimes my hand and sometimes the hand of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would enter and come out in turn. [88]
EXPLANATION
The fact that Umm Subayya and the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution together from the same vessel is evidence that a man may perform ablution with water left over by a woman, and a woman may perform ablution with water left over by a man.
79 – According to the narration from Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: In the time of the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him), men and women (Musaddad said) would all perform ablution from a single vessel together. [89]
EXPLANATION
Before the verse regarding women avoiding men and covering their heads was revealed, men and women would perform ablution together from the same vessel. After the verse of hijab was revealed, only those who were maḥram (unmarriageable kin) could perform ablution together in this manner. (ʿAwn al-Maʿbūd, vol. 1, p. 30)
80 – According to the narration from ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: In the time of the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him), we and the women would perform ablution from a single vessel and would reach our hands into the same vessel.
