The Prayer Section · 133 – Those Who Say the Evening Prayer Can Be Read Briefly
Hisham ibn Urwa, may Allah be pleased with him, said: Hisham’s father used to recite chapters [surahs] in the evening prayer, such as al-Adiyat and those similar to it in brevity.
Abu Dawud said: This narration indicates that the abrogation of reciting lengthy chapters in the evening prayer, and that reciting shorter ones is more appropriate.
Amr ibn Shu'ayb, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated from his grandfather, Abdullah ibn Amr, that he heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, lead (the prayer) reciting every chapter, both lengthy and short, only in obligatory prayers.
COMMENTARY:
This honorable hadith indicates that there is no chapter forbidden to be recited in prayer.
Abu Osman an-Nahdi, may Allah be pleased with him, relates: that he prayed the evening prayer behind Ibn Mas'ud, who recited Surah al-Ikhlas (during the prayer).
