THE CHAPTER OF PURIFICATION · 56 – TO ILLUMINATE THE BEARD
Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) would take a handful of water when performing ablution, insert his hand under his chin, and wash his beard, saying, “My Lord, the Exalted and Majestic, has commanded me to do so.”
Abu Dawud said: Walid ibn Zuwran narrated from Hajjaj ibn Hajjaj and Abu al-Maliح ar-Raqqi.
COMMENTARY:
It is obligatory for those with sparse beards to wash the roots of their beards. As for those with thick beards, it is recommended (sunnah mustahabbah) to bring the backs of their hands towards the throat, turn the palms outwards, and insert their fingers under the beard to wash it in a crescent shape.
