PURIFICATION SECTION · 32 – TAKING ABLUTION UPON ABLUTION
62 – Abū Gutayf al-Huzalī said: I was with ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him). The adhān for ẓuhr was called, he performed ablution and prayed. When the adhān for ʿaṣr was called, he performed ablution again. I asked him: – What is the reason for performing ablution again while already in a state of ablution? ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar replied: The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Whoever performs ablution while already in a state of ablution, Allah writes for him ten good deeds.” [76] Abū Dāwūd said: This is Musaddad’s ḥadīth, and it is more complete. APPENDIX 1 – In these two ḥadīths numbered 62 and 65, the Gulle mentioned is a vessel made of clay produced in Hejar, which holds 250 ritl of water according to the Iraqi ritl. Two Gulle is five hundred ritl. One ritl is approximately one fifth of a sāʿ; according to the calculation of our teacher Ömer Nasuhi Bilmen in the chapter on fiṭra, since one sāʿ is 3,333 grams, one ritl is approximately 6.66 grams. Such a Gulle holds 175 liters of water. Two Gulle make 350 liters of water.
2 – In the ḥadīths numbered 92 and 94, the Mudd is mentioned: it is a quarter of a sāʿ. It is approximately eight thousand three hundred thirty-three (8,333 grams).
3 – a- In the ḥadīth numbered 95, Ritl, Sāʿ, and Makūk are mentioned. One sāʿ is three thousand three hundred thirty-three grams (3,333); since one sāʿ consists of five ritl and one third of a birritl, one ritl is approximately six hundred sixty grams (660 grams). b – Makūk: It is a vessel that holds about one and a half sāʿ of water. If we accept one sāʿ as 3,333 grams, one and a half sāʿ is about five liters. Thus, Makūk is a vessel that holds five liters of water.
4 – In the ḥadīth numbered 238, Ferak is mentioned. Ferak is a vessel that holds two sāʿ of water. If we accept one sāʿ as 3,333 grams, one Ferak is 6,666 grams, that is, two liters and six hundred sixty-six grams.
5 – There is also the word Fark. Ibn al-Athīr said that one Fark is 22.5 (twenty-two and a half) sāʿ. Since each sāʿ is 3,333 grams, one Fark equals 72 liters of water.
6 – Since in Arab countries, especially the ritl is used with more or less variation, in the Kamus translation, while explaining these words, expressions such as "some have said thus" are used. Therefore, the values we have given here are approximate values.
