Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade wearing the *sedil* (placing a garment over one’s back without putting it on properly) and covering the mouth of a person (in prayer). [416]

Abū Dāwūd said: Isl (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from Atā, who narrated from Abū Hurayrah. Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade the *sedil*.

EXPLANATION

*Sedil*: It is to place a piece of cloth on the head without tying its ends down and letting it hang, or placing a coat or jacket on one’s shoulder without wearing it. One has been forbidden from standing in prayer with such carelessness, and it has been deemed *makrūh* (undesirable) according to jurisprudence.

From Ibn ‘Ujayr, may Allah be pleased with him:

I would often see Ata’ performing the prayer while wearing a garment (saddle-cloth).

Abu Dawud says: This hadith contradicts the weak hadith mentioned previously.

EXPLANATION

Malik [ibn Anas], based on this narration, is of the opinion that it is not disliked to take off a jacket and cloak over the shoulder in prayer.
