Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:

We used to pray with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) during intensely hot weather. If one of us could not endure placing his face on the ground, he would spread his garment and prostrate upon it. [425]

**Explanation:**

There is no harm in spreading a cloth to mitigate the heat of the earth or to prevent distraction during prostration and praying upon it. However, it is unsuitable to perform prostration on one edge of the clothing worn. If there is a reason such as heat or cold, then it is permissible. The view of Imam al-A’zam, Malik, and Ahmad ibn Hanbal (may Allah be pleased with them all) is also like this.

According to al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him), it is not permissible to prostrate upon the clothing worn, regardless of the reason. (Bezl-ul-Mashhud, vol. 4, p. 327)
