23 – It is narrated from Ḥudhayfa (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to a garbage dump of a certain people and urinated while standing, then he asked for water and wiped over his leather socks (khuffayn). [44]
EXPLANATION
The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) would always sit while relieving himself of urine. He would not urinate standing. In this instance, however, it is possible that he did so because he could not find a clean place to squat, or, as narrated from Abū Hurayra, he urinated standing due to a pain in his back. Imām al-Shāfiʿī said: “Among the Arabs, it was widespread that those who had back pain would be cured if they urinated standing.” Although the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) would regularly urinate sitting, it did rarely occur that he did so standing due to pain or some other necessity.
