ABLUTION SECTION · 128 – FINDING WATER BY ONE WHO HAS PERFORMED ABLUTION BY DRY CONTACT
Abu Sa’id al-Hudri, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated:
Two companions set out on a journey and the time for prayer arrived. They had no water with them. They performed tayammum with clean earth and prayed. Then they found water within the time. One of them repeated the ablution and the prayer. The other did not repeat (it). The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ, said to the one who did not repeat his prayer: “You have acted in accordance with the sunna, your prayer is complete.” And He said to the one who repeated his ablution and his prayer: “There are two rewards for you.” [240]
Abu Dawud said: No one narrated this hadith from Ibn Nafi’ except Layth, from ‘Umayr ibn Abi Najiyyah, from Bakir ibn Sawda’, from Ata ibn Yasar, from the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ.
Abu Dawud said: The mention of Abu Sa’id al-Hudri's name is not preserved in this hadith. This hadith is mursal.
COMMENTARY
One should postpone the prayer to its last time in a place where one hopes to find water. After performing the prayer with tayammum, if water is found within the time, it is not necessary to repeat the prayer. This is the view of Hanafi, Shafi’i, Maliki and Ahmad ibn Hanbal. (Maalim-us-sunna vol. 1, p. 210 Badr al-Munir vol. 3, p. 69)
From Ata ibn Yasar, may Allah be pleased with him, it was narrated with the same meaning as the preceding hadith: "two companions from among his people."
