VOLUME 2 – 212 – WHO IS REQUIRED TO PRAY FRIDAY PRAYER?

– The people used to come for Jumu'ah in turns, from their homes and from Avali.
[Explanation: *Yantabun* means "they take turns." Avali were villages located east of Medina, a distance of three, four, or five miles. Taking turns for Jumu'ah meant that those in Avali would attend one Jumu'ah, and those on campaign would go to another. Thus, they would alternate, so as not to miss the Messenger of God’s sermons.]

Abdullah ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) said: “Friday prayer is obligatory for every hearing of the adhan.”
Abu Dawud said: "A group of narrators transmitted this hadith, shortening it to Abdullah ibn Amr. They did not relate it to the Prophet (peace and blessings upon him). Rather, Kabisa attributed the hadith to the Messenger of Allah."
