SECTION ON PRAYER · 36 – WHAT A PERSON WHO HEARS THE MU'ADHIN SHOULD SAY
Abū Sa’īd al-Hudrī (may Allah be pleased with him) related: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) said, “When you hear the call to prayer, say what the mu'adhdhin says.”
Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-‘As, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say:
“When you hear the call to prayer from the mu’adhdhin, recite as he recites, then send blessings upon me. For whoever sends blessings upon me once, Allah will have mercy on him ten times.
Then ask for intercession for me from Allah, the Exalted and Majestic. Intercession is a station in Paradise that only one of Allah's servants will attain. And I hope to be that one. Whoever asks for intercession for me, he obtains it.”
Abdullah ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:
A man said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him): "O Messenger of Allah, the Mu'adhdhins are favored over us because of the Adhan." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) said: “Say what they say,” and when the Adhan is concluded, he commanded, “Ask of Allah whatever you wish, and it will be given.”
Said ibn Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) said: “Whoever hears the adhan and says, ‘I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah, alone and without partners; and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Prophet. O Allah, You are my Lord, Muhammad is my prophet, and I am content with Islam,’ his sins will be forgiven.” [344]
Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, related: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, would say, “When I hear the call to prayer, I recite the declarations [of faith], and I bear witness.”
COMMENTARY
Whenever the muezzin recited the declarations [of faith] in the call to prayer, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, would say, “And I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.”
Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) said: “Whenever the muadhdhin says, ‘Allah is Greater, Allah is Greater,’ one of you should say, ‘Allah is Greater, Allah is Greater.’ Whenever the muadhdhin says, ‘I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah, I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah,’ he should also say, ‘I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah, I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah.’ Whenever the muadhdhin says, ‘I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah,’ he should also say, ‘I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.’ When the muadhdhin says, ‘Come to prayer,’ he says, ‘I have no power to avoid sin or do good except through the help of Allah; indeed, He is the One who creates it in me.’ And when the muadhdhin says, ‘Come to salvation,’ he again says, ‘I have no power to avoid sin or do good; indeed, they are only created in me by Allah.’ Whenever the muadhdhin says, ‘Allah is Greater, Allah is Greater,’ he says, ‘Allah is Greater.’ Whenever the muadhdhin says, ‘There is no deity except Allah,’ he says, ‘There is no deity except Allah,’ then he enters Paradise.”
