It is narrated from Esma bint Yazid bin as-Sakan al-Ansarīyyah, may Allah be pleased with her, that during the time of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, there was no obligation for divorced women to observe ‘iddah. However, she had been divorced from her husband. When Esma was divorced, the Most High, the Glorious God, revealed the verse concerning ‘iddah (for divorce). Thus, Esma became the first woman among the divorced for whom ‘iddah was prescribed.
