2709 – It is narrated from Abū ʿUbayda’s father, from ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd, who said: (After the Battle of Badr ended, I began to walk among the dead, and) lo and behold, I saw that Abū Jahl’s leg had been struck with a sword. I said, “O enemy of Allah, O Abū Jahl, surely Allah has humiliated the one who is far from good.” I said this without any fear of him. He replied, “What is so strange about a man being killed by his own people?” Thereupon, I struck him with a useless sword, and he could not ward off the blow. When the sword fell from my hand, I struck him with his own sword until he died.

EXPLANATION

Sariğ: Slain. Ahar: Disgraced, accursed. Gayri Tail: Blunt, does not cut. Ebadü Min Recalün: In truth. When the sons of Afra’ brought down Abū Jahl, Ibn Masʿūd encountered him. As mentioned in the hadith, he killed him. He brought his head to the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled at the courage of Ibn Masʿūd, who was a small-statured man.
