SECTION ON ZAKĀT · 9 – A PERSON PURCHASING THEIR OWN CHARITY
1593 – It is narrated from ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him): ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb had mounted a warrior in the path of Allah on a horse. He later found that horse being sold, and he wished to purchase it. He asked the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) about this. The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Do not buy it; do not take back your charity.” [451]
EXPLANATION
This noble hadith indicates that it is disliked (makrūh) for a person to purchase the charity (ṣadaqa) they have given. This is also the view of al-Shāfiʿī and Mālik.
