JIHAD SECTION · 37 – A MAN'S EARNESTNESS FOR WAGE AND SPOILS

Abdullah ibn Hawleel al-Azdi, may Allah be pleased with him, related:
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sent us out on an expedition to acquire booty, and we returned without anything. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, perceived the hardship in our faces. Then he rose among us and said: “O Lord! Do not entrust them to me, for I may fail to render justice to them. Nor do You entrust them to themselves, for they are incapable of rendering justice to them. And do not entrust them to people, for people prefer themselves over others.” Then he placed his hand upon my head or on the top of my head, and said: “O son of Hawleel! When you see the land of the caliphate descend upon Syria, earthquakes, trials, sorrows, and great events will surely come. The Day of Resurrection is closer to people than the nearness of this hand to his head.”
