JIHAD SECTION · 151 – Whoever comes to war after the spoils of war have been taken, he does not get a share of the spoils.
Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) sent a raiding party towards Najd led by 'Ubayn ibn Sa'd ibn al-'As. 'Ubayn ibn Sa'd and his men arrived there after the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) conquered Khaybar. Their horses had belts made of date fiber. 'Ubayn said, "O Messenger of Allah, give us a share." Abū Hurayrah said: “I said to him, ‘Do not give them a share, O Messenger of Allah.’” 'Ubayn said to him, "Are you the one who said that, O mountain cat rolling down from the peak?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) said to him, “Be silent, O 'Ubayn.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) did not give them a share. [488]
COMMENTARY
Huzum: The plural of Hizam, meaning belts.
Wabru: An animal with a short tail like a cat’s.
Abū Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated:
I came to Medina. The Messenger of Allah had conquered Khaybar and was present there. I then went to him and requested that he allocate me a share from the spoils of war.
One of Sa’d ibn al-’As's sons said, “O Messenger of Allah, do not give him a share.”
Abū Hurayrah said: "I think this man is the killer of Ibn Qawqa."
(‘Ebān ibn) Sa’d ibn ‘Ās exclaimed, “How astonishing! Look at this man who came to us from the mountain – [Allah] has granted me victory over him, and he did not kill me as a disbeliever, nor disgraced me; yet he accuses me of killing a person.”
(Abū Dāwūd said: They were ten men. Six were killed. The rest returned.)
Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:
We arrived from Abyssinia and our arrival coincided with the time when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) conquered Khaybar. We were given a share [of the spoils].
Or, Abu Musa said: A share was given to us from it; the Prophet (peace and blessings upon him) did not distribute anything from the spoils to anyone who was not present there at the conquest of Khaybar, but only distributed it among those who were present. And also to the people of our ship, along with those who were present at the conquest, [Cafer al-Tayyar] and his companions.
**Note:** The bracketed name "Cafer al-Tayyar" is added for clarity as it's a significant figure mentioned in the text.
According to the narration of Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and said, “Indeed, Osman (bin Affan) has gone into the service of Allah and His Messenger.” He pledged allegiance on his behalf. He allocated a share from the spoils of war for him alone, among those who were not present at Badr.
COMMENTARY:
When setting out for the battle of Badr, the wife of Hadrat Osman, Hadrat Ruqayya, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), was seriously ill. Hadrat Osman had been unable to accompany them due to his care for her. Hadrat Osman performed her burial rites. This indicated his being in the service of Allah and His Messenger. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his right hand over his left hand and pledged allegiance on his behalf. And he allocated a share from the spoils of war to Hadrat Osman.
