SACRIFICE SECTION · 3 – CUTTING A PORTION OF THE HAIR FOR ONE WHO WISHES TO OFFER SACRIFICE
2791 – It is narrated from Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Whoever has an animal to sacrifice, when the month of Dhu’l-Hijjah begins, let him not remove anything from his hair or his nails until he has offered his sacrifice.”
EXPLANATION
Sa‘īd ibn al-Musayyab also used to say that those who are going to offer a sacrifice should not shave or cut their nails during the ten days of Dhu’l-Hijjah. He would command this narration. Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal and Isḥāq ibn Rāhawayh also said the same. Imām al-Shāfiʿī and Imām Mālik said that acting upon this narration is recommended (mandūb). Imām Abū Ḥanīfa, on the other hand, permitted the one who will offer a sacrifice to shave or cut his nails. Among the Ḥanafīs, there are also those who say that this is recommended (mandūb). [525]
