Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) say: “The Noble and Exalted Lord is well-pleased with a group being dragged to Paradise with chains.” [465]

COMMENTARY: Allah’s (Glorified and Exalted) being pleased with something signifies His approval of it and indicates its importance. Those who are dragged to Paradise with chains are Muslims who were captured as prisoners and chained, then died in the land of the enemy. Or they are disbelievers who fell captive to the Muslims and subsequently attained guidance as Muslims, entering Paradise while previously being captives bound in chains.

Jundub ibn Makkiyy may Allah be pleased with him, narrated:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Abdullah ibn Galib al-Laythi at the head of a raiding party. I was among that raiding party. He ordered them to attack the Banu Mulawwah tribe in the area of Kadid from dispersed directions. We set out and when we reached the area of Kadid, we encountered Haris ibn al-Barsa al-Laythi and captured him. He said, "I came desiring Islam, and I set out for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." We said to him, “If you are a Muslim, restraining you for one night and one day will not harm you. And if you are not a Muslim, we restrain you to be safe from you.” Eventually, we bound him securely. [466]

COMMENTARY

Jundub ibn Makkiyy may Allah be pleased with him is among the people of Medina. Military historians have mentioned him amongst the companions. (Tahdhib al-Tahdhib, vol. 2, p. 119)

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) sent a rider towards Najd. They brought to him the leader of the people of Yamama from Banu Hanif, namely Samama bin Usal. They tied him to a pillar in the Masjid an-Nabawi. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) then came out to him and said: “O Samama, what is the true thought that you harbor within yourself? What do you think I will do with you?” He replied: "O Muhammad, you are goodness within me. I think you will act righteously. If you kill me, you have killed someone deserving of death; and if you pardon me, you have favored one who will be grateful. If you desire wealth, ask for it, and it will be given to you as much as you wish.”

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) left him at that. When the next morning came, he again said to him: “O Samama, what is the true thought that you harbor within yourself?” He repeated almost the same words as before. When the day after that arrived, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) said: "Release Samama." (They released him.) He went with him to a date palm grove near the Masjid, where he performed ablution. Then he entered the Masjid and proclaimed the Shahada: “I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.”

Kutayba narrated this hadith in this manner. Isa bin Hammad al-Misri said: It was told to me by Layth, and he said, "Za zimma" (one deserving of respect).

Yahya ibn Abdullah ibn Abdurrahman ibn Sa'd ibn Zürare (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:

When captives were brought (to Medina), Sevda bintu Zamah, a wife of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), was in the company of Avf and Muawwiz, the sons of Afrā’ family. This occurred before it was ordained for women to wear the veil. Sevda (may Allah be pleased with her) said: By Allah, when the captives were brought, I was among them. They came to me and said, "These captives have been brought from Badr." So I returned home. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was at home, and what did I see? Abu Yazid Saheil ibn Amr was there, standing bound with a rope around his neck in a corner of the room. The narrator then mentioned the hadith.

Abu Dawud said: Avf and Muawwiz, whose names are mentioned in the hadith, killed Abu Jahil ibn Hisham, responding to him. But they did not recognize him. Both of them were martyred on the day of Badr.
