FASTING CHAPTER · 23 – BREAKING THE FAST BEFORE SUNSET
According to a narration from Asma bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with her), she said:
During a cloudy Ramadan day in the lifetime of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), we broke our fast, thinking that the sun had set, then it rose again. Abu Usama said, “I asked Hisham whether they were ordered to make up for [the missed fasting].” Hisham replied, “Is there a way to avoid making up for it?” [271]
EXPLANATION
The phrase "Wabuddun min zalik" means "Is it necessary?" according to Kastalani. According to Kastalani’s explanation, it signifies that making up for the fast is certainly obligatory. And according to Imam al-Shafi'i, Malik, Ahmad ibn Hanbal and Abu Hanifa, it is also obligatory to make up for that day.
