According to the report of Nafi' ibn 'Ujayr ibn 'Abd al-Yazid ibn Ruqana, he said:

Ruqana, son of 'Abd al-Yazid, divorced his wife, Suhayma, saying, “You are certainly divorced.” He reported this to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "By God, I intended no more than one divorce." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "By God, you did not intend anything more than one [divorce]." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered Ruqana to take his wife back. Later, Ruqana divorced her a second time during the reign of 'Umar and a third time during the reign of 'Uthman.

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “How many divorces did you intend when you divorced her?” Rukana said, “I intended one divorce.” The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “Do you swear by Allah that you gave one divorce?” Rukana said, "I swear by Allah." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “Divorce with ‘Certainly’ takes place according to your intention.” [185]
