CHAPTER 16 – REPLACING THE HEDYE
Salim bin Abdullah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated from his father:
That Omar bin al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, purchased a noble camel for three hundred dinars and sent it as a sacrifice. He came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: “O Messenger of Allah! I bought a noble camel for three hundred dinars and sent it as a sacrifice. Should I sell it and buy another with its price? Or should I sacrifice it?” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, replied: "No, sacrifice it itself."
Abu Dawud says: The reason for the Messenger of Allah’s ruling in this matter was that Omar had marked that camel.
EXPLANATION
Noble: This term refers to a purebred, distinguished, or superior animal. In al-Munziri's Concise Commentary, "Bukhitiyyah" is used instead of “noble.” It denotes a breed of two-humped camels prevalent in Khurasan. Thus, Omar bought a two-humped camel for the sacrifice and then hesitated, wondering whether to sell it and buy others. He asked the Exalted One of Mankind.
