From Abdullah ibn Burayda’s father, Burayda (may Allah be pleased with him), it is related that:

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) said: “Whoever We appoint to a task and assign him a salary, then he takes something beyond that salary is like stealing from the spoils of war.”

‘Ubayd ibn Sa’id (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:

“'Umar appointed me as a collector of zakat. When I completed my task, he ordered that I be given a salary. I said, ‘I performed this duty for the sake of Allah, not to receive compensation.’ 'Umar said, ‘Take what is given to you.’ I said, ‘I collected zakat in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him), and he gave me a salary for my task.’”

Muṣawwirid ibn Shaddād, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated:

He said: "Whenever We appoint someone to collect zakat, if he is unmarried, let him marry. If he has no servant, let him employ one. And if he has no home, let him acquire one."

Miswar said: Abu Bakr said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: ‘Whoever acquires wealth other than this [referring to zakat collection], is a betrayer or a thief.’”
