-VOLUME 3- · 64 – DEPARTURE FROM ARAFAT (TO MUZDALIFAH)

1920 – It is narrated from Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) took Usāma (may Allah be pleased with him) behind him (on his mount) and descended slowly from ʿArafāt. He said, “O people, go gently, for reward is not attained by urging camels and horses to run.” Ibn ʿAbbās says, “After that, I did not see the animals rearing up and running until we reached Muzdalifah.” Wahb added the following: Then the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) in the same way took al-Faḍl, the son of ʿAbbās, behind him and said, “O people, go gently. For reward is not attained by urging camels and horses to run.” I did not see the animals lifting their forelegs and running until we reached Minā. [4]

1921 – It is narrated from Kurayb (may Allah be pleased with him): I asked Usāma, the son of Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him), “How did you proceed on the evening when you were riding behind the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him)? Tell me.” Usāma said: We came to the mountain path where the people had made their camels kneel for the night’s rest. The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) made his camel kneel and then relieved himself. (Zuheyr did not say ‘relieved himself’.) The Prophet then asked for water for ablution and performed a very light ablution. I said, “O Messenger of Allah, the time for prayer has come.” The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “The prayer will be performed ahead (at Muzdalifah).” He mounted his camel, we came to Muzdalifah, and he led the Maghrib prayer. The people made their camels kneel at their places of lodging, and they did not unload their burdens until he had led the ʿIshāʾ prayer. He then led the ʿIshāʾ prayer, and after that they unloaded their burdens. In the narration of Muḥammad ibn Kathīr, the following is added: I said, “(On the day of sacrifice) how did you proceed when you woke up in the morning?” He said: Al-Faḍl was riding behind the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him). I was among those of Quraysh who were walking to Minā at the front. [5]
EXPLANATION
Tāris: To descend at the end of the night. Shib: The path between two mountains. Usāma was behind the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) from ʿArafāt to Muzdalifah, and al-Faḍl ibn ʿAbbās was behind him from Muzdalifah to Minā.

1922 – It is narrated from ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) mounted Usāma (may Allah be pleased with him) behind him. He continued on his camel at a moderate pace. The people were striking their camels on the right and left, making them run. The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) was saying, without turning to look at them, “O people, go gently.” When the sun set, the time came to return from ʿArafāt (to Muzdalifah). [6]

1923 – It is narrated from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I was sitting when Usāma, the son of Zayd, was asked, “How did the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) proceed from ʿArafāt during the Farewell Pilgrimage?” Usāma (may Allah be pleased with him) said: He was walking between slow and fast. When there was an open space, he would walk faster. [7] Hishām said: The walk called ‘nass’ is faster than the walk called ‘anak’.
EXPLANATION
Anak: Walking a little faster than slow. Nass: Walking even faster. Fajwah: The open space between two places.

1924 – It is narrated from Usāma (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I was riding behind the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him). When the sun set, the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) set out (for Muzdalifah).

1925 – A – It is narrated from Kurayb (may Allah be pleased with him): I heard Usāma ibn Zayd say: The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) returned from ʿArafāt (to Muzdalifah). When he came to the path between the two hills, he dismounted from his camel, relieved himself, renewed his ablution, and performed a light ablution. I said to the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him), “The time for prayer has come.” The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “The prayer will be performed ahead (at Muzdalifah).” He mounted his camel. When he arrived at Muzdalifah, he dismounted and performed a complete ablution. The iqāmah was given, and he led the Maghrib prayer. Then each person made his camel kneel at the place where he would stay. Then the iqāmah was given for ʿIshāʾ, and he led that prayer as well. He did not perform anything (supererogatory) between Maghrib and ʿIshāʾ. [8]

1925 – B – Yaʿqūb ibn ʿĀṣim ibn ʿUrwah heard al-Sharīd say: “I went (from ʿArafāt to Muzdalifah) with the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him). Until we reached Muzdalifah, his foot did not touch the ground.”
