FASTING SECTION · 72 – Regarding Permission to Intend Fasting After Dawn
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) would come to me and say, “Is there any food with you?” And when we said, "No," he would say, "I am fasting."
Waki’ added: Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) continued, saying that on another day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) came to us. We said, “O Messenger of Allah, a gift of *hays* was given to us, which we kept for you.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) then commanded, "Bring it closer." Talha said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) was fasting; Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) continued, saying that he broke his fast.
[Footnote: *Hays* is a food made from dates, cheese, and butter, like what we call *höşmerim*, a kind of sweet.]
Umm Hani (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated:
When Mecca was conquered, Fatima (may Allah be pleased with her) sat on the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)’s left side, and Umm Hani on his right.
Umm Hani said: "A servant girl brought a cup containing sherbet and offered it to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). He drank from it, then passed it to Umm Hani. Umm Hani drank from it and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah! I was fasting, and I have broken my fast.’
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked her: ‘Were you fulfilling a debt?’ She replied: ‘No.’ The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) then said: ‘It does not harm you if it was voluntary [nafilah].'"
