FASTING CHAPTER · 48 – FASTING DURING HOLIDAY DAYS
Abu Ubayd, may Allah be pleased with him, related:
I was present with Umar during a festival. He began the prayer before the sermon and then said: “Indeed, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade fasting on these two days of celebration. On the Day of Sacrifice, you eat from the meat of your sacrifice, and in Ramaḍān, it is the day you break your fast.”
Abū Sa’īd al-Hudrī (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) forbade fasting on two days: 1 – The day of Ramaḍān, 2 – The day of Sacrifice (ʿĪd al-Adhā). He also forbade two types of dress: 1 – Wearing a single garment such that no part of the body is covered, 2 – A man sitting with his knees drawn up in a single garment. He also forbade praying at two times: 1 – After the Fajr prayer, 2 – After the ʿAṣr prayer.
[Note:]
*Lebsetüssammā:* Refers to a man wearing a single garment and either throwing one end over his shoulder, exposing an area of modesty, or wearing a single garment in such a way that no part of his hand can be extended.
*Ikhtibā:* Refers to sitting with knees drawn up and wrapping the garment around the knees, thus exposing an area of modesty.
