SECTION ON JIHAD · 8 – THE SUPERIORITY OF FIGHTING THE BYZANTINES OVER FIGHTING OTHER NATIONS
2488 – ʿAbd al-Ḥabīr ibn Qays ibn Shammās (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from his father, from his grandfather, who said: A woman called Umm Khalad came to the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) with her face veiled. She was inquiring about her son, although her son had been killed (in battle). One of the Companions (ṣaḥāba) of the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her, “You have come to ask about your son while your face is veiled?” The woman replied, “Even if I have lost my son, I will never lose my modesty.” The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her, “For your son there is the reward of two martyrs.” He explained, “Because he was killed by the People of the Book (ahl al-kitāb), namely the Byzantines.”
