JIHAD SECTION · 76 – FLAGS AND BANNER
It is narrated from Yunus ibn Ubayd, a freedman of Muhammad ibn Qasim, that he said:
Muhammad ibn Qasim sent me to Bura ibn Azib, asking about the appearance of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)’s banner. Bura ibn Azib replied: “The Prophet’s banner was a black, square piece of cloth with stripes.”
In a narration reported from Jabir, it is said that the banner was white on the day the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, entered Mecca.
From Simak, who heard it from a man of his tribe, who heard it from another, that:
I saw the banner of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as yellow. [409]
COMMENTARY
There is an unknown person in the chain of narration of this hadith. Thus, the banner of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was made of a cloth with stripes like leopard feathers, black dominating over white. The military standard was white.
From Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him):
The banner of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was black, and his standard was white.
It is also related from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him): That at some of the battlefields of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Ummu Maktum held a black banner.
From Mujahid (may Allah be pleased with him):
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had a standard that was the color of dust.”
Simak (may Allah be pleased with him) met Ibn Abbas, Ibn Umar, and Shurayh.
Tamim bin Hazl narrated from Abdurrahman bin Asam.
Ibn Hibban mentioned him among the unreliable narrators. (Tahdhib, vol. 4, p. 334)
