THE DEAD CHAPTER · 59 – RECITAL DURING THE FUNERAL PRAYER
Talhah ibn Abdullah ibn Awf, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated:
I performed the funeral prayer with Ibn Abbas. He recited al-Fatihah and said, “Reciting al-Fatihah in the funeral prayer is sunnah.” [109]
COMMENTARY
According to the Shafi’is, reciting al-Fatihah in the funeral prayer is a pillar (rukun). According to the Hanbalis, it is obligatory (wajib). According to the Malikis, it is disliked (makruh). The Hanafi school does not recite it.
