Kâb bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:
According to a narration, he said: I said, "O Messenger of Allah, I will distribute the entirety of my wealth for the completion of my repentance (for my failure to participate in the campaign of Tabuk) and for the pleasure of Allah and His Messenger." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Retain a portion of your wealth with you; that is better for you.” I said, "I will keep my share from Khaybar to myself."

Kâb bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from his father:
At the time when he sought excuse for not participating in the campaign of Tabuk and his repentance was accepted, he said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him): “I wish to separate myself completely from my wealth.” He recounted a similar narration to the one preceding it, until [he reached the words]: "Retain a portion of your wealth with you; that is better for you."

Kâ’b bin Mâlik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from his father, saying:
Kâ’b or Abû Lubâba, or whoever Allah wills, said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him), “I wish to leave my people's home where I have fallen into sin, and give away all my wealth in charity to purify myself from it.”
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) said: "If you give a third of your wealth in charity, that will suffice."

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, replied, “That is not permissible.”
I said, “I will give away half.” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, replied, “That is not permissible.” I said, "I will give away a third." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, replied, “Yes, give away a third.” I said, “I will keep my share from the lands of Khaybar for myself and distribute the rest of my wealth.”
