EXPLANATION
According to the Ḥanafī, Shāfiʿī, Mālikī schools and Sufyān al-Thawrī, bloodletting does not break the fast. According to Ibn al-Musayyab, al-Shaʿbī, and al-Nakhaʿī, having bloodletting done while fasting is disliked (makrūh). According to Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal and Isḥāq ibn Rāhawayh, bloodletting breaks the fast; making up (qaḍāʾ) is required, but expiation (kaffāra) is not. According to ʿAṭāʾ, both making up and expiation are required. (Maʿālim al-Sunan, vol. 3, p. 242)
