SECTION OF MARRIAGE · 47 – INTERCOURSE AND INTIMACY WITH A MENSTRUATING WOMAN

2165 – It is narrated from Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him): When a woman among the Jews menstruated, they would expel her from the house. They would not eat with her, nor drink anything with her, nor remain with her in the house. This was asked to the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him), and upon this, Allah, free from all deficiencies and Exalted, revealed: “They ask you concerning menstruation. Say: It is a harm, so keep away from women during menstruation and do not approach them until they are purified. But when they have purified themselves, then go in unto them as Allah has commanded you.” (Qur’an, 2:222) The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Stay with them in the houses, and do everything except intercourse.” The Jews said: “This man (the Prophet), if he abandons any of our customs, he does so only to oppose us.” Thereupon, Usayd ibn Ḥuḍayr and ʿUbāda ibn Bishr came to the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: “O Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him), the Jews are saying such and such. Should we not have intercourse with our wives during menstruation?” The face (color) of the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) changed, so much so that we thought he was angry with them. They immediately left. Then, someone who had brought milk as a gift to the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) appeared before them. The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) sent the milk after them. We then understood that our Master was not angry with them. [158]

2166 – It is narrated from Jābir ibn Ṣubh (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I heard Khilāsa al-Ḥajarī say: I heard ʿĀʾisha (may Allah be pleased with her) say: “While I was in the state of menstruation, the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) and I would lie together under a single garment. If anything (blood) from me touched him, he would wash that spot and would not move elsewhere. If anything from him (his garment) was soiled, he would wash that spot and would not move elsewhere, and he would pray in that garment.” [159]

2167 – It is narrated from Maymūna bint al-Ḥārith (may Allah be pleased with her): When the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) wished to be intimate with one of his wives while she was menstruating, he would command her to tie her lower garment, and then he would be intimate with her.
