Ziyad ibn Jubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:

I was with Ibn Umar in Mina. I saw a man slaughtering a sacrificial camel while it was prostrate, and I told him, “Let it stand, tie its legs, and slaughter it standing up, following the sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him).”

Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) commanded me to oversee the sacrificial camels, to distribute their meat, skins, and haircloths to the poor, and not to pay the butcher from the meat of the sacrifice. He said, “We will pay the butcher’s fee from our own resources.” [540]

**EXPLANATION:**

According to Imam al-Awwal (Abu Hanifa), the owner may eat from the meat of sacrifices slaughtered as voluntary acts, and those sacrificed for Qiran and Tamattu' Hajj. He is not permitted to eat from the meat of vowed sacrifices, and he pays the butcher’s fee from his own resources. There is no objection to giving a gift to the butcher from the sacrifice. The owner may not eat from the meat of a penalty sacrifice.

According to al-Shafi'i, the one who slaughters may not eat from the meat of sacrifices slaughtered for attainment of Tamattu’ and Qiran, nor from the meat of penalty sacrifices, but he may eat from the meat of voluntary sacrifices.

Imam Malik says that the owner may eat from the meat of a sacrifice sent due to corruption of Hajj or inability to perform it, and from other sacrifices, but he is not permitted to eat from the meat of a penalty sacrifice slaughtered for hunting while in ihram, nor from sacrifices vowed for the poor.

Ahmed bin Hanbal says: The one who slaughters a sacrifice as penance for hunting while in ihram may not eat from the meat of vowed sacrifices, but he may eat from the meat of all other sacrifices.
