It is narrated from Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him):

The *talbiyah* of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was: “Labbaik Allahumma labbaik, labbaik la shareeka laka labbaik, innahul hamdu wa-n-nimata lakal-mulku la shareeka lak.”

“O Lord, I respond to Your call repeatedly, I have come before You to fulfill all Your commands. O my Lord, responding to Your call is incumbent upon me. There is no associate with You in Your dominion. O Allah, I have turned myself entirely to You, praise be to You, blessing is from You, sovereignty is Yours, and there is no associate with You in these.” [570]

**EXPLANATION:**

Linguists and scholars of language have explained many aspects regarding the analysis and meaning of the word *labbaik*.

The common aspect in their narrations is that it signifies repetition and responding to His command.

The invitation of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) to people with his tongue to the Ka’bah was through this word.

Amr bin Luhay, who brought idolatry from Amalika and introduced it to Mecca, just as he erected the idol Hubal at the Ka'bah, also added the phrase "illa shareekan huwa lahu tamliku-hu wa ma malakahu" to the end of the *talbiyah* word. This fallacy persisted during the era of polytheism, and according to a narration from Ibn Abbas, in the early days of the Messenger of Allah’s (peace and blessings be upon him) mission, the Quraysh used to recite these words in their *talbiyahs*.

When the Quraysh recited the *talbiyah* within the Sacred Precinct, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would say, “Do not utter this lamentation after ‘Labbaik la shareeka lak.’”

Islam, which uprooted the tree of polytheism, has also removed these words from the *talbiyah*.

Jabir ibn Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) recited the talbiyah, mentioning it as in the hadith related by Ibn Umar, and the people added to the talbiyah [phrases like] “Ze’l-Ma’arij” and similar words. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) heard these words but said nothing.

From Hallad bin as-Sa'd al-Ansari, may Allah be pleased with him, who narrated from his father:

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Gabriel came to me and commanded me to order my companions and those with me to raise their voices in the remembrance of Allah.”

The narrator intended by saying that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, uttered two words – either [the phrase for] declaration of purity (tahlil) or [the phrase for] response (talbiyah) – commanding them to raise their voices.

COMMENTARY:

This honorable hadith is evidence for the obligation of talbiyyah. According to Imam al-Awwal (Abu Hanifa), talbiyyah is obligatory, and a penalty sacrifice is required for one who neglects it. According to Imam ash-Shafi’i, no penalty is required for neglecting talbiyyah.
