CORPSES EPISODE · 66 – HOW MANY PEOPLE CAN FIT INTO A GRAVE TO BURY A CORPSE?
Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was washed by Ali, Fadil, and Usama bin Zayd, and they placed him in the grave.
Sha'bi said: This report reached me from Muharrab or Ibn Abu Murahhab.
They also took Abdurrahman bin Awf with them into the grave. When Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) finished the burial, he said, “The one who dies takes over the affairs of the deceased,” meaning that a person’s affairs are taken over by his close relatives.
[Explanation:]
Abu Murahhab's real name was Suwaid bin Kays. Since Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was closely related to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in two ways, he took on the responsibilities after the Prophet’s death, and subsequently said, “The one who dies takes over the affairs of the deceased,” to express why he had taken on those affairs and to seek excuse from those present.
Abū Murāhab (may Allah be pleased with him) related:
"ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf descended to the grave of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. He said, 'I still see them as if they were four people.'"
