SECTION ON ZAKĀT · 25 – HOW MUCH ZAKĀT MAY BE GIVEN TO ONE PERSON?
1638 – It is narrated from Bushayr ibn Yasār (may Allah be pleased with him): According to what he was informed by a man from the Anṣār named Sahl ibn Abū Ḥathma, the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him one hundred camels from the zakāt camels as blood money for the Anṣārī who was martyred at Khaybar. EXPLANATION
Al-Khaṭṭābī says: The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) gave this camel from the ṣadaqa (charity, i.e., zakāt) to Sahl ibn Abū Ḥathma in order to reconcile between the people of Khaybar and the Anṣār due to a killing that occurred between them. According to Abū Ḥanīfa’s opinion, more than two hundred dirhams of zakāt cannot be given to a poor person who has no debts. According to Imām al-Shāfiʿī, it is permissible to give as much as will relieve one from poverty. According to Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal, fifty dirhams are given. (Maʿālim al-Sunan, vol. 2, p. 236)
